The audience tag is now mandatory, along with the ‘agency’ and ‘topic’ tags, on all content on nsw.gov.au.
These tags are mandatory so that we can improve search and personalisation for customers on nsw.gov.au. By adding meaningful tags to our content, we can provide more accurate personalisation and search results and a better user experience on nsw.gov.au.
Adding an audience tag in the CMS
Your content will not publish if the three mandatory tag fields are not populated. You will be prompted with an error message if you forget to add the mandatory tags:

Step 1 – Add one of the four main audience tags (mandatory)
Add one of the four main audience tags to your content:
- Citizen
- Business
- Visitors
- Public Servants
From the dropdown list, add at least one of the four main audience tags. This is mandatory.
Select the main audience tag that fits best with who your content is aimed at. You can add more than one main audience tag if they apply to your content.
Step 2 – Add a sub-audience tag (optional)
After selecting a main audience tag you can then select a sub-audience tag if there is one that is relevant to your content.
Adding a sub-Audience tag is optional. If there is no sub-audience tag that is relevant to your content, then you only need to add a main audience tag.
Step 3 – Publish your content
If your content has an agency tag, a topic tag and an audience tag, then you can save it as a draft and publish it when it is ready.
