What is the cache?
The cache is temporary computer memory that helps websites, browsers and apps load faster.
When you visit a web page, your device stores parts of that page – such as images, layout files and scripts in its cache. This means the next time you visit, the page loads more quickly because it doesn’t need to download everything again.
Why clear the cache?
Clearing the cache removes the old files your device or browser has stored. This allows it to load the most recent version of a web page, file or image.
You might need to clear your cache if:
- a page isn’t showing the latest content
- a file (like a PDF or image) has been replaced but the old version still appears
- your device is running low on storage.
You can usually clear the cache in your browser or device settings.
Drupal and caching
Drupal automatically clears cached web pages and files at regular intervals to help the website run efficiently.
Sometimes, though, a cached version may still appear even after an update has been made. For example, you might upload a new PDF but visitors still see the old one.
If you need the cache to be cleared quickly
If an outdated web page or file such as a PDF is still appearing on the site:
- Complete the Content changes, website updates and support from a Content Administrator form.
- A team member will clear the cache for that page or file so the latest version appears.
