Key features
- Legislation states that specific orders issued by Building Commission NSW need to be made publicly available.
- These orders are published to a register of building work orders, which is a filterable list of Resource pages on a landing page on nsw.gov.au
- Orders remain on the Register until they are revoked by the Secretary. This usually means when defects have been rectified.
- Publishing is expected to happen within 2 business hours of issue.
- If a modified order is issued, it needs to be uploaded as a new resource, with the original order being unpublished and archived.
- The original issue date and the date of modification should form part of the page content.
- PDFs need to be unpublished and eventually removed from the Content Management System (CMS) as part of a regular process.
- Their container Resource pages need to be archived and marked as Archived. These should then be Deleted from the CMS.
- Unpublishing is expected to happen with 2 business hours of revocation.
Pre-publishing a work order for Building Commission NSW
- The Building Commission’s legal team produces the orders.
- The document is signed by the Commissioner.
- The document is sent to the Developer.
- A PDF is produced.
- The PDF needs to be tagged and optimised for accessibility.
- The PDF is sent to the Digital Comms team by raising a ticket using their online form ticketing system.
- The details you should send through via the ticket need to include:
- name of order
- property address
- date of issue (and date of modification, if applicable)
- the PDF summary (for example, the legislation the order is issued under, and the first paragraph of the work order as laid out inside the PDF).
Publishing to nsw.gov.au
- Each order PDF needs to be checked again that it is tagged and optimised for accessibility.
- A Resource content page (container) for each PDF needs to be created.
- The Resource content page has set of required fields to be filled in.
Creating the Resource content page
Content tab
- The following fields are filled in using the information as follows:
- Page title: name of order. For example, Rectification order issued to XYZ Pty Ltd
- Summary: property address. For example, 123 Park Street, Placeville NSW 2222
- Body content field: PDF summary. For example, the legislation the order is issued under, and the first paragraph of the work order as laid out inside the PDF. Add a new block for issue date and modification date, if required.
Tip: layout for the Content field is as follows:
[Bold] Issued under [name of section/Act/year]
[Paragraph copy] First paragraph of PDF.
[optional] Issue date: dd/mm/YYYY
Date of modification: dd/mm/YYYY
Resource tab
- Resource Publication type: Order
-
Publication date: date of issue for the order (in PDF)
- note that if this is an amended or modified order, it is the issue date for the amendment or modification.
- Upload the PDF to the Media library in the CMS as a no-index file. This can happen from within the Resource content type in the Resource media - Add resource field.
- The file label should be the same as the file name but written as sentence case with no dashes in the title. For example, building-work-rectification-order-123-park-ave-parkfield.pdf should have file label Building work rectification order for 123 Park Ave Parkfield.
- Set the PDF to 'no index' during upload. This is so that when a work order is revoked/unpublished, it reduces possibility of being ‘found’ by search engines.
Tags tab
Work orders have a particular set of tags associated with them which need to be applied so that they can appear on the Register. Agency is Building Commission NSW, Topic is Housing and construction. The Category tag should match the type of order i.e.
- Building work rectification orders
- Prohibition orders
- Rectification orders
- Stop work orders
Connections tab
Make sure the parent page is set to:

Save and publish
- Once the PDF has been added to the Resource page and all tagging has been completed, the page can be published.
- The Register page (a resource search and filter page) needs to be checked that the new resource/s have been published and are now visible at the top of the finder in reverse date order.
- Check that the PDF is present and that all the information is correctly displayed. Test the filters to ensure the order is categorised correctly as well.
Unpublishing
- When a work order is revoked under legislation, it must be removed from the site.
- The resource page must be archived then deleted and the PDF unpublished.
- Adding the words "to be removed" to the Media file title can help locate the file/s later.
- The PDF can then be removed from CMS on request.
- You can search for PDFs labelled "to be removed" in the Media library and then download a CSV list of them.
- Use the Help Hub Request a Content change or update form to ask for files to be removed from the CMS (you can attach the CSV list to this form).
